Trapezoidal Driveway

A driveway with parallel sides 4 m and 6 m, and perpendicular height 10 m.

Key values: a = 4 m · b = 6 m · h = 10 m

Roof Cross-Section

A trapezoidal roof cross-section with parallel sides 8 m and 12 m, and height 3 m.

Key values: a = 8 m · b = 12 m · h = 3 m

Documentation

Trapezoid Area

A=12(a+b)×hA = \frac{1}{2}(a + b) \times h

where aa and bb are the two parallel sides (bases) and hh is the perpendicular height between them. The formula is the average of the two bases times the height.

Why the Average of the Bases?

Place two identical trapezoids together (one flipped) to form a parallelogram with base (a+b)(a + b) and height hh. The parallelogram has area (a+b)×h(a+b) \times h, so each trapezoid is half:

A=(a+b)×h2A = \frac{(a+b) \times h}{2}

Special Cases

  • If a=ba = b: the trapezoid is a parallelogram, and A=a×hA = a \times h
  • If a=0a = 0: the trapezoid degenerates to a triangle, and A=12bhA = \frac{1}{2}bh
  • Isosceles trapezoid: non-parallel sides are equal; diagonals are also equal
  • Right trapezoid: one side is perpendicular to the bases, so that side is the height

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the area of a trapezoid?

Use A=12(a+b)×hA = \frac{1}{2}(a + b) \times h, where aa and bb are the two parallel sides (bases) and hh is the perpendicular height between them. The formula is the average of the two bases times the height.

Why is trapezoid area the average of the bases times the height?

If you place two identical trapezoids together (one flipped), they form a parallelogram with base (a+b)(a + b) and height hh. The parallelogram has area (a+b)×h(a + b) \times h, so each trapezoid is half that.

What is the difference between a trapezoid and a trapezium?

In American English, a trapezoid has exactly one pair of parallel sides. In British English, the same shape is called a trapezium. The formulas are identical — only the name differs by region.

Do I use the slant side or the perpendicular height in the formula?

Always use the perpendicular height — the shortest distance between the two parallel sides, measured at a right angle. The slant side is longer than the height and will give an incorrect (too large) result.

What happens when both parallel sides are equal?

When a=ba = b, the trapezoid becomes a parallelogram, and the formula simplifies to A=a×hA = a \times h. When one side is zero (a=0a = 0), the trapezoid degenerates into a triangle with A=12bhA = \frac{1}{2}bh.
