Rectangle Area

A=l×wA = l \times w

where ll is the length and ww is the width. The rectangle is the simplest shape for area calculation — the formula matches our intuition of “rows × columns.”

Maximum Area for Fixed Perimeter

Among all rectangles with a given perimeter PP, the square has the largest area. If P=40P = 40, the maximum area is achieved by a 10×10 square (A=100A = 100), not a 15×5 rectangle (A=75A = 75).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the area of a rectangle?

Multiply the length by the width: A=l×wA = l \times w. For example, a 5×35 \times 3 m rectangle has an area of 15 m². Both measurements must be in the same unit.

What is the difference between area and perimeter of a rectangle?

Area measures the space inside the rectangle (in square units), calculated as l×wl \times w. Perimeter measures the total distance around the outside (in linear units), calculated as 2(l+w)2(l + w). A 5×35 \times 3 rectangle has area 15 but perimeter 16.

How do I find the diagonal of a rectangle?

Use the Pythagorean theorem: d=l2+w2d = \sqrt{l^2 + w^2}. For example, a 3×43 \times 4 rectangle has diagonal =9+16=25=5= \sqrt{9 + 16} = \sqrt{25} = 5. The diagonal is always longer than either side.

Which rectangle shape gives the most area for a fixed perimeter?

A square. Among all rectangles with the same perimeter, the square encloses the maximum area. For example, with perimeter 40: a 10×1010 \times 10 square gives area 100, while a 15×515 \times 5 rectangle gives only 75.

How much extra flooring should I order for a rectangular room?

Order 10% more than the calculated area to account for cuts, waste, and future repairs. If the room is 15 m², order materials for 16.5 m². For diagonal or herringbone patterns, add 15-20% instead.
