Coffee Machine Cup Calculator

Why Your Coffee Maker "Cups" Are Not Real Cups

When your coffee maker says "12 cups," it means 12 five-ounce cups -- only 60 ounces total, not the 96 ounces you might expect from 12 standard 8 oz measuring cups. This calculator converts your carafe line markings to actual volume and tells you exactly how much coffee to use in grams, tablespoons, and scoops.

Select your brewing method. Defaults and ratio ranges adjust automatically.

The word "cup" means different things. Coffee maker markings use 5 oz, not 8 oz.

The 5 oz Cup Standard

Nearly all drip coffee makers (Mr. Coffee, Cuisinart, Hamilton Beach, etc.) define one "cup" as 5 fluid ounces (148 mL). This standard originated from the traditional European demitasse serving. To use this calculator, set the cup size to "Coffee maker cup (5 oz)" and enter the number of cups marked on your carafe.

Examples

Mr. Coffee 12-Cup Carafe

12-cup drip coffee maker at medium strength

12 x 5 oz = 60 oz (1,776 mL). At 1:16 ratio, use about 111 g (21 tablespoons) of medium-ground coffee.

Key takeaway: A "12-cup" coffee maker only holds 7.5 measuring cups of water.

Decode Your Carafe

Knowing your actual cup size prevents weak or overly strong batches.

  • Measure your carafe at the highest line to verify the cup size
  • If coffee from your machine tastes weak, you may be using 8 oz per "cup" instead of 5 oz
  • Write your ideal gram dose on a sticker on the machine for quick reference

Frequently Asked Questions about Coffee Machine Cup Calculator

How much coffee for a 10-cup coffee maker?

A 10-cup coffee maker (at 5 oz per cup) uses 50 oz (1,479 mL) of water. At medium strength (1:16), use about 92 g of coffee, which is roughly 17 level tablespoons of medium-ground coffee.

Are all coffee maker cups 5 oz?

Most are, but not all. Some European models use 4 oz or 6 oz cups. Check your coffee maker manual or measure the carafe at the highest cup line and divide by the number of cups to find your per-cup size.
