Medium vs Large
Compare a 12" medium pizza with a 16" large pizza at typical prices.
Key values: 12" vs 16" · $12.99 vs $16.99 · 8 vs 10 slices
Personal vs Family
Is one family pizza a better deal than two personal pizzas?
Key values: 8" vs 18" · $7.99 vs $19.99 · 6 vs 12 slices
Same Size, Different Price
Compare two equally-sized pizzas at different price points.
Key values: 14" vs 14" · $14.99 vs $11.99 · 8 vs 8 slices
Understanding Pizza Size and Value
When ordering pizza, the size you choose has a much bigger impact on how much food you get than most people realize. A pizza with double the diameter does not have double the area -- it has four times the area. This mathematical reality means that larger pizzas almost always offer better value per square inch.
This calculator helps you make informed decisions by comparing two pizzas based on their diameter, price, and number of slices. It calculates the total area, area per slice, price per square inch, and determines which pizza gives you the most food for your money.
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Pizza 1 details -- diameter (in inches), price, and number of slices.
- Enter Pizza 2 details -- the same measurements for the second pizza you want to compare.
- Review the results -- the calculator shows which pizza is the better value, along with area comparison, price per square inch, and area per slice for both.
If you do not know the price, enter 0 and the calculator will still compare the sizes without determining a value winner.
The Math Behind Pizza Sizes
A pizza is a circle, so its area is calculated using the standard circle area formula:
Where is the area, is the radius, and is the diameter.
Price per Square Inch
Area per Slice
Common Pizza Sizes
| Size Name | Diameter | Area | vs. 12" Medium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal | 8" | 50.3 sq in | 44% of medium |
| Small | 10" | 78.5 sq in | 69% of medium |
| Medium | 12" | 113.1 sq in | baseline |
| Large | 14" | 153.9 sq in | 136% of medium |
| Extra Large | 16" | 201.1 sq in | 178% of medium |
| Party | 18" | 254.5 sq in | 225% of medium |
Worked Examples
Example 1: Medium vs Large
A 12" medium pizza costs $12.99 and a 14" large costs $15.99. Which is the better deal?
- Medium area:
- Large area:
- Medium price/sq in:
- Large price/sq in:
Result: The large pizza is 9.6% cheaper per square inch -- it is the better value.
Example 2: Two Smalls vs One Large
Two 10" pizzas at $8.99 each vs one 16" pizza at $16.99. Which gives more food?
- Two smalls combined: for $17.98
- One large: for $16.99
Result: The single 16" pizza has 28% more area and costs less. One large wins decisively.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a bigger pizza always a better deal?
Almost always. Because area scales with the square of the diameter, a slightly larger pizza is significantly larger in area. The price increase is typically much less than the area increase, making larger pizzas more cost-efficient.
Should I buy two medium pizzas or one large?
One large pizza usually gives you more food. Two 12-inch pizzas have a combined area of about 226 square inches, while one 18-inch pizza has about 254 square inches -- 12% more food, often for less money.
Does the number of slices matter?
The number of slices does not change the total amount of pizza. A 14-inch pizza cut into 8 slices has the same area as one cut into 10 slices. However, fewer slices means each slice is larger.
How accurate is this calculator?
The area calculation is mathematically exact for a perfect circle. Real pizzas may vary slightly due to uneven shaping, crust thickness, and topping distribution, but the comparison is still very reliable for value assessment.
