Understanding Weighted Categories

Most courses divide your grade into weighted categories (e.g., Homework 20%, Exams 50%, Participation 10%). Each category contributes differently to your final grade. Understanding these weights helps you prioritize your efforts where they matter most.

Examples

Tracking a Typical Course

A student wants to track their progress in a course with homework, quizzes, and exams.

With HW 1 at 90% and Quiz 1 at 80%, the current grade reflects only completed work. As more assignments are completed, the grade becomes more representative of final performance.

Key takeaway: Early tracking helps identify which categories need more attention before it is too late.

Staying on Track

Use these strategies to maintain good course standing:

Enter grades as soon as you receive them to maintain an accurate view
Pay attention to categories with high weights - they impact your grade most
Use the projection feature to see where you are heading
Identify categories where you are underperforming early in the semester
