How Drop-Lowest Works

A drop-lowest policy removes the worst score(s) from a grade category before computing the average. If a class has 10 quizzes and drops the lowest 2:

Average=Sum of top (nd) scoresnd\text{Average} = \frac{\text{Sum of top } (n - d) \text{ scores}}{n - d}

where nn is total assignments and dd is the number dropped.

Worked Example

Quiz scores: 85, 92, 78, 95, 60, 88, 91, 73, 96, 89

Without drop: 84710=84.7%\frac{847}{10} = 84.7\%

Drop lowest 2 (60, 73): 84760738=7148=89.25%\frac{847 - 60 - 73}{8} = \frac{714}{8} = 89.25\%

Improvement: +4.55 percentage points

Strategic Implications

  • Insurance policy: Knowing the lowest score will be dropped reduces the cost of a bad day — illness, emergencies, or difficult topics.
  • Don't skip intentionally: A zero is much worse than a poor attempt. Even a 40% score might not be your lowest — and skipping uses up your “drop” on a zero instead of a genuinely bad test.
  • Equal weight matters: Drop-lowest only works when all assignments in the category have equal point value. If assignments have different weights, dropping the lowest score might not drop the lowest impact.

Pro tip: Track which score is currently your lowest as the semester progresses. This tells you how much the policy is helping you and whether you need to improve consistency.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the drop-lowest grading policy work?

The policy removes the lowest score(s) from a category before averaging. With 10 quizzes and 2 drops, only the top 8 scores count. The average is computed as: sum of top (nd) scoresnd\frac{\text{sum of top } (n - d) \text{ scores}}{n - d}, where nn is total assignments and dd is the number dropped.

Should I skip an assignment if the lowest grade is dropped?

No. A zero from skipping is almost always worse than a poor attempt. Even a 40% score may not be your lowest, and skipping wastes your drop on a zero instead of cushioning a genuinely bad test day.

Does drop-lowest work with differently weighted assignments?

Drop-lowest only works fairly when all assignments in the category have equal point value. If assignments carry different weights, dropping the lowest percentage score might not drop the lowest impact on your grade. Check whether your professor drops by score or by weighted impact.

When does dropping the lowest grade help the most?

The benefit is greatest when you have a large outlier (like a 30% or a zero) among otherwise consistent scores, fewer total assignments (each carries more weight), and a higher drop ratio (dropping 2 of 8 helps far more than dropping 1 of 20).

How do I calculate my grade improvement from dropping?

Compute your average with and without the dropped scores. For example, scores of 85, 92, 78, 95, 60 average 82%. Dropping the 60 gives 85+92+78+954=87.5%\frac{85+92+78+95}{4} = 87.5\%. The improvement is 87.5%82%=5.587.5\% - 82\% = 5.5 percentage points.
