The Conversion Formula

F=95C+32=1.8C+32F = \frac{9}{5}\,C + 32 = 1.8\,C + 32

The factor 95\frac{9}{5} accounts for the different interval sizes: a Fahrenheit degree is 59\frac{5}{9} the size of a Celsius degree. The offset of 32 aligns the freezing point of water.

Mental Math Shortcuts

Quick estimate

Double the Celsius value and add 30. This gives a rough approximation: 20°C2(20)+30=70°F20°C \approx 2(20)+30 = 70°F (actual: 68°F).

The crossover

40°C=40°F-40°C = -40°F — the only temperature where both scales agree. Useful as a sanity check.

History of the Celsius Scale

Anders Celsius (1742) originally defined his scale inverted — 0° for boiling and 100° for freezing. Carl Linnaeus (or Daniel Ekström) reversed it after Celsius's death. The scale was renamed from “centigrade” to “Celsius” in 1948 to avoid confusion with the angular unit (centigrade = 1/100 of a right angle).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the formula to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Multiply the Celsius temperature by 95\frac{9}{5} (or 1.8) and add 32. The formula is F=95×C+32F = \frac{9}{5} \times C + 32. For example, 25C=(1.8×25)+32=77F25^\circ C = (1.8 \times 25) + 32 = 77^\circ F.

Is there a quick way to estimate Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Double the Celsius value and add 30 for a fast approximation. For example, 20C20^\circ C becomes roughly 2×20+30=70F2 \times 20 + 30 = 70^\circ F (actual: 68F68^\circ F). This works well for everyday weather temperatures.

At what temperature are Celsius and Fahrenheit the same?

Celsius and Fahrenheit are equal at 40-40^\circ. This is the only point where both scales intersect: 40C=40F-40^\circ C = -40^\circ F.

Why does the conversion formula use 32?

The offset of 32 aligns the two scales at the freezing point of water. Water freezes at 0C0^\circ C and 32F32^\circ F, so 32 must be added after scaling to account for where each scale places zero.

Which countries still use Fahrenheit?

The United States, its territories, and a handful of Caribbean nations use Fahrenheit for everyday temperature measurement. The rest of the world uses Celsius. Scientific contexts worldwide use Celsius or Kelvin.
