Finding X% of a Number

X% of Y=X100×YX\% \text{ of } Y = \frac{X}{100} \times Y

This is the most fundamental percentage operation: converting a percentage to a decimal and multiplying. For example, 15% of 200 = 0.15 × 200 = 30.

Mental Math Shortcuts

A powerful property: X% of Y = Y% of X. This means 8% of 50 = 50% of 8 = 4. Always choose the easier direction.

10% trick: Move the decimal point one place left. 10% of 85 = 8.5

5% trick: Find 10%, then halve it. 5% of 240 = 24/2 = 12

1% trick: Move the decimal two places left. 1% of 350 = 3.50

Combine: 15% = 10% + 5%. So 15% of 80 = 8 + 4 = 12

Everyday Applications

  • Sales tax: 8.5% of the purchase price
  • Tips: 15-20% of the bill total
  • Discounts: 25% off = 25% of the original price subtracted
  • Commissions: 3% of the sale amount
  • Interest: 5% of the principal per year

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?

Convert the percentage to a decimal by dividing by 100, then multiply by the number. For example, 1515\\% \text{ of } 200 = 0.15 \times 200 = 30.

Is X% of Y the same as Y% of X?

Yes. This is because multiplication is commutative: (X/100)×Y=(Y/100)×X(X/100) \times Y = (Y/100) \times X. So 8% of 50 = 50% of 8 = 4. Use whichever direction is easier to compute mentally.

How do I quickly calculate 15% of a number in my head?

Find 10% by moving the decimal one place left, then find 5% by halving that result, and add them together. For example, 15% of $80: 10% = $8, 5% = $4, total = $12.

How do I find the total after adding a percentage?

Multiply the original number by (1+percentage/100)(1 + \text{percentage}/100). For example, $50 plus 8.5% tax: \\$50 \times 1.085 = \\$54.25. This is faster than calculating the percentage separately and adding it.

What is the difference between “percentage of” and “percentage off”?

“Percentage of” calculates a portion (e.g., 25% of $80 = $20). “Percentage off” subtracts that portion from the original (e.g., 25% off $80 = $80 − $20 = $60). “Off” means you pay the remaining percentage.
